15 to receive Presidential Medal of Freedom today - Las Vegas Democrat | Examiner.com

Today, President Barack Obama will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 15 recipients at a White house ceremony.

The Medal of Freedom is the Nation’s highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

The presentation, set to begin at 1:30 p.m. EST, will be streamed live online at www.whitehouse.gov.

The 15 people to receive the award:

Former President George H. W. Bush, who was the 41st President of the United States.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Congressman John Lewis, an American hero and a giant of the Civil Rights Movement.
