Senator Dean Heller continues to kill jobs in Nevada - Las Vegas Democrat | Examiner.com

A cloture vote was held in the U.S. Senate this past Tuesday, June 21, 2011, for The Economic Development Revitalization Act of 2011 (S 782), which helps to maintain over 4000 jobs in Nevada, and has had bipartisan support in the past, was voted down this time, 49-51 and Senator Heller was one of the no votes.

Here in Nevada, "the program has already created or sustained 4,326 jobs. Reauthorizing the legislation would continue to create new jobs at a time when Nevada is suffering from the highest unemployment rate in the Nation. Tuesday’s vote comes on top of Heller’s vote earlier this year to gut the Department of Energy loan guarantee program that would create thousands of jobs in Nevada, including a recent announcement of a loan for a clean energy project in Tonopah that would create 600 jobs alone."

Carolyn Goodman wins race for Las Vegas Mayor - Las Vegas Democrat | Examiner.com

Carolyn Goodman wins race for Las Vegas Mayor - Las Vegas Democrat | Examiner.com

Carolyn Goodman , wife of Oscar Goodman, the current Mayor of Las Vegas, has won the Las Vegas Mayoral race beating Chris Giunchigliani.

With 100% of the precinct’s counted, Carolyn Goodman received 33,104 votes (60.51%) and Chris Giunchigliani (aka Chris G) received 21,601 votes (39.49%).

Giunchigliani put up a good fight considering the name recognition that Carolyn Goodman received from her husband, Oscar Goodman, who has been Mayor of Las Vegas for the last 12 years. Not to mention the campaign machine that was already in place for Mrs. Goodman.

In her victory speech Carolyn Goodman said she received a call from Chris G. conceding the race and that she congratulated her on the win. Goodman went on to say, "Her intentions were good. She wanted the best for the city but I believe we wanted more”, taking what sounds like one last dig at her opponent.

Oscar Goodman said of his wife, "She is going to take us to places we have never been"…"She's going to take us, to the next level". It sounds good, not sure where that next level is that he mentioned, but, it was a celebration and Oscar was very proud of his wife’s victory, as he should be.

Congressman Joe Heck calls Social Security a ‘pyramid scheme’ (video) - Las Vegas Democrat | Examiner.com

Congressman Joe Heck calls Social Security a ‘pyramid scheme’ (video) - Las Vegas Democrat | Examiner.com

Freshman Congressman Joe Heck (R-NV) held a Town Hall meeting and was caught on tape telling those in attendance that Social Security is a “pyramid scheme”. (watch video on left)

"The full retirement age is 67 and the lifespan is 80, so when they first conceived Social Security, they didn't think they were going to be paying benefits for 13-15 years. That's one of the reasons why this pyramid scheme isn't working.”

Then Heck was asked about raising the retirement age, and said that no one has been talking about raising the retirement age, which is a flat out lie, which enraged the audience even more. Upon which Heck himself talked of a scenario where the retirement age should be raised.

“The kid who’s 18 years old — should that kid have to work to age 70? I don’t know but that could be a possibility to try to make this program work. Because look – Social Security started in 1935. … Fast forward to now. Full retirement age is 67 and the life span is 80. So when they first conceived Social Security they didn’t think they were going to be paying benefits for 13, 15 years. That’s one of the reasons why this pyramid scheme isn’t working.”

Congressman Joe Heck has already voted to kill Medicare, so it should be no surprise that he and his party are also going after Social Security which they have done in the past. Former President Bush even pushed for the privatization of Social Security. Just imagine what would have happened if Social Security was privatized prior to Bush’s destruction of the US economy before he left office.

American citizens lost trillions of dollars in their 401k plans when the economy collapsed in 2008, and if Social Security were privatized at that time, trillions more would have been lost. But yet Republicans are still pushing this idea, why, because financial institutions would make trillions.

Nevada has a very large senior population and you can be sure that in the 2012 election those seniors who receive Social Security and Medicare, will be voting their dissatisfaction with having Congressman Joe Heck as their Representative in Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District.

Gov. Sandoval and Nevada Legislators reach deal on State budget - Las Vegas Democrat | Examiner.com

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval and the State Legislature have finally worked out a deal for Nevada’s budget with time to spare on the 110th day of the 120 day legislative session.

Sandoval who made a pledge of “no new taxes” and stubbornly stood by his words for better or worse, mostly worse for Nevadans, did allow some current taxes that were set to expire to continue for another two years, but refused to allow any new taxes even though businesses in Nevada said that to improve our education system and pool of new employees, they are needed.

Governor Sandoval said in a statement release:
