Republican proposes slashing Veterans Health care and Benefits by $4.5 billion - Las Vegas Democrat | Examiner.com

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) last week released a budget cut proposal which attacks our troops, our veterans and their families in a time of war. Veteran groups across the country want to know why she doesn’t support our troops and veterans.

In her quest to pander and appease her extremist right wing Tea Party base, Bachmann announced a plan to cut federal spending by $400 billion. Her slash and axe plan according to the Air Force Times includes freezing the Veterans Affairs Department’s health care spending and cuts to veterans’ disability benefits.

The Air Force Times reports her plan would slice $4.5 billion from the VA, including reducing 150,000 veterans’ disability compensation and the amount they receive in Social Security Disability Income.

Sandoval: ‘Our education system is broken’ we must cut spending on education - Las Vegas Democrat | Examiner.com

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval gave his first State of the State address last night (transcript), and as expected his budget proposal has deep cuts in Education, State workers pay, Medicaid, and Health and Human Services.

In his speech he said, “Graduation rates remain the worst in the nation. The achievement gap leaves too many students without hope or opportunity. And grade-level performance on national assessments lags.”

Sandoval said that he would allow the elimination of the “Class Size Reduction” program which was started in the early 90’s to combat the over crowding of class rooms.

The Governor said he would create “a Block Grant Program that encourages districts to be innovative and results-oriented. If one district chooses to continue class size reduction, so be it. If another district wants to pursue other programs, we will no longer hold them back.”

Gov. Brian Sandoval to give State of the State speech tonight - Las Vegas Clark County Elections 2010 | Examiner.com

Newly elected Governor Brian Sandoval (R-NV) will give his first State of the State speech tonight at 6:00pm. The speech will be shown on all the local news channels throughout the State.

After 12 consecutive years of Republican Governors here in Nevada, Sandoval is faced with a looming budget crisis of nearly $6 billion over the next four years.

Sandoval has made a pledge of “no new taxes or fees” and is expected to announce draconian measures in his budget cuts and consolidations which will affect nearly every Nevadan. Education and Medicaid account for more than half of the States budget and are expected to be hit the hardest. Nevada’s higher education system has been told they may have to cut their budget by as much as 20 percent and should expect an increase in tuition costs for students.

During last years election campaign Sandoval promised to deliver a budget proposal before the November election so Nevada voters could make a comparison to then candidate Rory Reid‘s budget, but Sandoval never released any budget proposal for the voters to see. Tonight’s speech should change that and give a clear indication on which direction Sandoval plans to take Nevada.
